When our world is turned upside down, it’s impossible to walk steady. Not knowing what will come next, taking a step seems daring. Our normal ways of re-balancing ourselves do not work. They cannot solve the problem, heal the rifts, restore our health, or mend our broken hearts. Nothing we possess is strong enough to turn the world right side up.

In the Gospel of Mark, a desperate father had his world turned upside down because his boy had been demon possessed since childhood. This demon had tormented his son and his loving father was desperate for any help that Jesus could offer. The father asked Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” Jesus responded, “‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”

Much like this desperate father, it is in this upside down world that God meets us. In fact, it is his upside down ways that re-center us, steady us, and show us how to live. In disorienting times we need a steadiness beyond ourselves and our circumstances. A steadiness that is unshakeable. Ways that reminds us we do not have to be enough and that God is.

This guide is an invitation to that steadiness and those ways. An invitation to believe in a steady God and his ways, to remember we are not alone, and to recognize our powerlessness and believe his powerfulness. It is an invitation to believe.

My prayer for you this Lenten season is for renewal and strength in believing as you sit with Jesus and others. As you are transformed and steadied, may you be a steadying presence of mercy, love, care, and compassion for others as God has been for you.
